Original Composition about Modern Slavery
‘CHANGE THE WAY’
CHANGE THE WAY we shop, do business and ultimately treat people! This song expresses the anguish of being bound by human power and control. The progressive formation of the instrumental mimics the most basic elements of survival when humans are enslaved… the body and voice, a human’s most basic possessions, are the only tools available for slaves to express themselves, clinging to these as their only freedom and a way of communicating their pain.
There are still over 40 million slaves worldwide, more than ever before in history… Modern Slavery is an epidemic!
‘Change the Way’ is an original, written and performed by Abira Niye Harvey as a responsive experimental song-writing activity to the word ‘POWER’ for the Talent Development Project.
CHANGE THE WAY
Aye aye aye-e-aye
When I open my eyes
There’s not much to see
It’s the pain inside
That conquers me
Singin’
Aye aye aye-e-aye
Aye aye aye-e-aye
(repeat)
Hold my arms
Tight behind
Don’t let me feel
What’s in my mind
Singin’
Aye aye aye-e-aye
chka chka chka chka
chka chka chka chka
Don’t let the power take over me
No guilty past can pull me down
The world will tumble at my feet
Can’t do nothing for you now
Can’t do nothing for you now
Sweat pours down
My darkened brow
Change the way
It’s not in my power
Singin’
Aye aye aye-e-aye
Aye aye aye-e-aye
Oo-er ooer
Aye aye aye-e-aye
Aye aye aye-e-aye
Don’t let this power take over me
No guilty past can pull me down
The world will tumble at my feet
Can’t do nothing for you now
(repeat)
Can’t do nothing for you now
(repeat to fade)
